What is Managed DNS service?

JS80

Lifer
We're paying this company http://www.ultradns.com over $1k/month for "managed dns"

WTF is it and why does it cost so much and is there a cheaper solution?

EDIT: 2 domains, approx 4 million visitors per month, we need 24/7 monitoring support w/100%.

$1k a month??

Managed DNS is where they host and manager your domains DNS server for you. A cheaper alternative is to do it yourself.

Try www.dnsmadeeasy.com

Managed DNS means that they manage dns services for you 🙂 What that entails is redundant dns servers on multiple networks spread geographically. How many sites are they managing for you? Might not be so shocking a price if you have a lot of domains.

damn that's a rip off. I could provide you with the same service for under $100

You can provide managed dns over multiple sites over multiple servers for possibly several domains with 24.7 support?

2 domains...

How do you know he doesn't have 100 domains? 😛 And for those of you saying he's getting the shaft maybe you should see what ultradns offers...

Now they do charge a premium but even with their competitors you'll be paying quite a bit once the number of sites you need managed goes up. Of course you could do it yourself, maybe 4 or 5 servers spread around the world on different networks in different datacenters, then hire someone to manage the servers... but if you're not a server admin it's a bit of work to setup

Oh, just read your last post... look into dnsmadeeasy, just another competitor and compare their offerings with what you get at ultradns

If all you're getting is the DNS management you may be better off switching. If you're tech savy you could even use zoneedit if you want

So is $1,500 a bad price for 2 domains and we get a bazillion hits and we directly rely on the website to generate revenue.

5 servers around the world? Wow, that is beyond paranoid to keep up two sites.
