amen to that
until you start producing music better than eminem, you really need to lay off
opinions are like a$$holes, everyones got one
i personally like Eminem. Granted, I don't believe in half the stuff he raps about. But i like his music and i enjoy listening to it. And if someone tried to censor the music you love, I'm sure you wouldn't be complaining about it at all :)

I never understood why people can't separate music from reality. Everyone seems to have an easier time realizing that Arnold doesn't really go around shooting 20 cops in the knee, or that Bruce Willis isn't a futuristic taxi driver.

Poems don't always reflect reality, movies don't always reflect reality, books don't always reflect reality, so why does everyone expect songs to?

Anything Eminem sings about has been done before in some form of artistic expression.

As I have said in a zillion other Eminem threads, people aren't worried because Eminem says bad things, they are worried because so many people buy his music.

There's a zillion other artists out there who do much worse stuff than Eminem. Pick up last month's rolling stone. (the one with the beatles on the cover, I think it was last month) There's an article in there about a group called Amen. Their lead singer cuts himself with razors onstage while performing. He bleeds on the crowd and they love it. You've probably never heard of them because there's not a large audience for that kind of style.

Eminem on the other hand sells millions of records. Lots of people connect with him and that's what is scaring the gay rights groups, women's rights groups, and parents. Problem isn't with Eminem, it's with his audience.

Things get attention for a reason

Hey Hubbs I think that Eminem does give a "fudge" about what people think about him and his music... because it's us who have to buy his music, so in one way or another he has to care, that mansion he lives in was provided by us, the consumer, if we don't like it he's going to have a demotion in living standards.

heh, always the same argument, I, for one, am a huge defender of free speech, let him say whatever he wants to say. That being said, neither I, nor my child will ever bring an eminem song into my house and that is as much my choice as it is others to buy his music. As for the argument of him sucking or not, well I am not saying I could do it better only that there are lots of people who ARE better than he is and dont have to use deragatory comments in order to sell their music.

That' funny being eminem dissed her in one of his unrealeased songs, something like:

She's a Dinosaur
She's nothing but a used up whore
She hasn't been good since '84

<edit, corrected lyrics>

<< his message is certainly not the one that I think kids today need ot be hearing . . . >>

I disagree that our president is more OFFENSIVE than eminem, but Eminem's hate lyrics aren't broadcast on national TV stations either. Sure you might see his videos on MTV, but talks of killing his wife aren't on TV. No one ever said you had to buy cable and get MTV with it and let your kids watch.

I personally think that having George W. as our president, someone that everyone in the nation is supposed to look up to, is somewhat of a disgrace. I'm glad I don't have children yet, as I certainly wouldn't want them aspiring to be as 'smart' as GW.

if youve ever heard him talk about himself you ll know that he doesnt consider himself really eminem. to him, slim shady is just a character, just like ziggy stardust and alice cooper, and maryln manson. hes also gone on to say that he really doesnt feel that way all the time, and that being slim shady has allowed him to deal with the feelings that he normally doesnt feel. so that being said i think eminem and maryln manson are great performers. they put on a great fantastic show. very imaginative and clever on both of thier parts.

you all need to stop listening to top 40 crap and start finding your own taste in music. go listen to some jazz.. or some drum and bass.. or anything that's not fed to you through mtv.

And to think, just yesterday, yahoos like this moron were defending Bill Clinton as the best president ever.

Which alternate reality have you losers been living in?

Madonna? Since when did she become an expert on anything?

SmiZ, I sense a minor flaw in your argument.

Music is often marketed as if it does reflect/represent reality.
We know that Arnold and Bruce Willis are actors, and are not really
like the characters they portray on the big screen, because the
Movie industry sells those stories as fictionally based, and actually
goes out of thier way to tell us otherwise if the TV show or movie
is "Based on a true story".

Books are also sold on a similar model; except for the best sellers,
all the other books are clearly placed in fiction or non-fiction.
And are (for the most part) marketed accordingly.

Popular Music, on the other hand, is marketed in the opposite way.
The promoters want you to believe that the singer actually has some
experience or emotional attachment to the song for you to identify
with. When Arnold says "Hasta La Vista", we assume he's just reading
lines that the scriptwriters wrote down for him; but when a singer
says "I want to shoot so-and-so", we are meant to believe that thought
and desire came from the artist themselves.

Poetry is a little harder to quantify, becuase it seeks to be deliberately
vague on whether it is coming from reality or the poet's imagination.
And most poeple are only exposed to it in the form of commercial jingles
and song lyrics.

Otherwise I would agree with calling it "artistic expression", but isn't
he supposed to be expressing what he really thinks? (Not really,
since Pop music is about selling albums more than selling ideas).

I haven't heard any Eminem songs to my knowledge, but I have enjoyed
listening to some Limp Bizkit singles, so I can see where one persons
offense is another's entertainment.
