What is Kosher Salt?

It has no iodine in it and the chunks are larger, but not nearly as large as rock salt.
You can substitute table salt, but use 1/2 the amount by volume, as they measure differently.
1 Tablespoon of kosher salt would be 1/2 a tablespoon of table salt.
 
Kosher salt has a higher mineral content than table salt, therefore the taste will be a bit different. It has a milder flavor and the granules are larger. Kosher salt and table salt are transferrable in recipes but you have to adjust the measurements: 1 teaspoon of Kosher salt = 1/2 teaspoon table salt. But if you have never tried Kosher salt, I recommend you do so. It is much tastier!
 
It's the salt recommended by Alton Brown. My wife uses it for every recipe. I bought one of the Alton Brown salt cellars for her to keep it in.

There's a Biblical prohibition against eating blood. Kosher meat is salted during processing to remove blood. A coarse salt is used to help draw out the blood, hence the name.

And, it's one of the crueler ways to butcher animals... pigs - hang them up by their hind legs, slit throats and let them slowly bleed to death.

You sound informed. Pigs are not eaten by Jews, there is no such thing as a Kosher pig. :roll:

If I'm not mistaken, the point of Kosher preparation is that the animal endures the least amount of suffering, and is actually killed instantly, with a slit across the trachea.. (may be wrong on that, but the same point)..
