What is it with Transflective LCD Screens

from what i know these types of LCD screens make viewing our gadgetry displays much easier in sunny ambience.
my expensive cell phone and mp3 player have great crips screens but they suck to view in the sun.

why are these transflective LCD not more prevalent?

is there something about the technology that makes it inferior for other things? is it that cost prohibitive?
