What is it with the manufacturers and these bright LED's?

I just bought a dvd player and a LCD tv recently and they both have these annoying bright LED's that shine when the product is turned off. What's with this? I can see maybe having a standby light or something, but why the bright LED's? The ironic thing is the dvd player has really soft looking blue display lights, but when the player is off, it has a bright red LED on the power button. The tv has no other lights on it. Just this annoying blue LED on the power button when the set is turned off. The worst part about all this is that this is for a bedroom, so both the LED's are like night lights in the room and keep me awake.

What can I do about this? Can I disable the LED's somehow without ruining the product? What would you do?
 
I'm with ya there Salvador... my girlfriend has some logitech speakers and the control pod thingie has this killer blue led. Great for when i'm getting up to leave at night (after some snuggling) and BOOM right in my face.
