What is it with republicans and social advancement?

This might qualify for P&N, but actually this is about CNN's series THE SEVENTIES.

Been watching THE SEVENTIES on CNN. A pretty good rehash of the events from the seventies.
Some of which I had forgotten had ever happened.

But one thing was clear, republicans have always fought against the advancement of social issues. Pretty much every social advancement you name, they opposed it and not only that, they predicted some dooms day scenario would follow if advancement were allowed to go forward.

Take women rights. The ERA, from the seventies.
Republicans absolutely hated that idea.
Even republican women were very opposed this.
I was shocked to learn from THE SEVENTIES that at one time a woman could not walk into a bank and borrow money WITHOUT her husbands consent.
The bank would simply say NO to loaning money to any woman without the husbands blessing.

THIS was just one reason why the ERA movement was started.
And republicans believed that passing such rights for women meant the DESTRUCTION of the American family, meant going against God's law, and was an outright attack on the traditional family and the superior American male.
Again, the ideology of the TRADITIONAL FAMILY comes into play.

You don't have to take my word for this, just roll the video.
Take a little walk down memory lane from the CNN series THE SEVENTIES.

And here we are today.
Nothing has really changed, not one bit as far as the DOOMS DAY predictions over advancing the very same social issues.
I find that extremely shocking.

When republicans speak of the good ole days, they refer to the pre 1970's era.
Women put in their place, gays put in their place, the man was the king and the little woman his servant, as was the intent in biblical scripture.
Here we are some 40+ years down the road, and not one thing has changed when to comes to republican ideology.
Not one single thing.

We have a black man as president, and republicans constantly predict dooms day.
Insisting Obama is not American born. And "show me the birth certificate".
Or that everything from this black president is pure evil sourced.

And the fight over abortion is being fought all over again from square one.
Voting rights are, once again, under attack from republicans.
NOT from democrats mind you, but ONLY from republicans.
And not to mention gay rights and marriage equality, which republicans promise will too be forever challenged.
Republicans are vehemently opposed to ANY advancement for marriage equality.
Again... Queue the republican dooms day scenario.
Queue the bobble heads.

This is really weird. Really weird!
It's like the republicans have been waiting over forty hard long years to revisit all the social issues from the seventies, and reverse every one they possibly can.
Every republican presidential candidate fully believes this.
Not one of them shy about "their" desire to turn back the clock.

Barefoot and pregnant. After all, it "is" written in biblical scripture.

Wow! Simply wow!
I can not believe this can be happening, all over again, today, after all this time and after all the water under the bridge.
Talk about hard headed and hell bent on getting ones way.
Not to mention for holding a grudge.

I hate to break it to these republicans, and I realize more than ever why all the republican presidential candidates act as they do, however....
Time does not stand still nor does it travel backwards.
No ma' am. No it does not. Especially not in America.
Possibly over in some third world country, possibly.
But not over here.

So, remind me again why it is republicans are so desperate to run the country?
And why they truly believe they can turn back the clock when it comes to women rights, gay rights, voting rights, and every other social issue since 1960 - 1970.
Do they truly believe American is going to tolerate for one second their doing this?
To roll back women rights and their legally guaranteed access for abortion?
Or nullify and take back the marriages of thousands of married gay couples?
Or send our gay society back into the closet of invisibility?
Or deny blacks and minorities equal assess to the voting booth?
Did I miss anything here....?

Simply speaking, it is not realistic nor healthy to shove the genie back into the bottle.
And history has proven, that never works.
That never works without killing off the host. America, as we know it today.

And if Americans should eventually come to their senses, that alone will ensure progressives rule the day now, and forever more.
Lets face it.
What liberal and progressive boils down to, is never ending advancement for all peoples rights.
Moving forward. Never backward.

Despite republicans attempts to gerrymander the system, to ensure their power despite the will of the people, history has proven the liberal progressive way always win in the end.
Which simply boils down to forever moving forward.
Which FYI is exactly how life was meant to work.

PS. CNN "The Seventies".
Take a shocking stroll down memory lane.
Find out how the more things change, for some the more they stay the same...

Moved from OT because it IS about politics, not the CNN Seventies series.

Why would the social views of Republicans change over the last forty years when the Bible remains constant? Their views will not change.

Yup. Men could beat their Wives and no would do anything. Cops would often not even show up on the scene. Child abuse would also not be investigated, if anyone even bothered to say something about it.

On the lighter side, all these issues and more were gaining support for action during that time.

Let them believe.

Conservatives believe in outdated concepts while the planet happily keeps turning and society and views change and progress, whether they like it or not. This is why they lost in 2008, lost in 2012 again and will of course also lose in 2016 🙂

I'm a fiscal conservative and social progressive so finding a party that doesn't base pander to both extremes is hard

I know your posts tend to run long, but holy shit, every one anymore is chapter book.

You even had to tack a PS at the end, because the previous 4000 words were obviously not enough.

Otherwise, sounds like a cool series. Been nice if you found space for a link...

PS. Learn to get to the point. NOBODY is reading all that crap.
