What is it with people and the Pope?

Well, as some of you may know WYD is happening here in TO and the pope came, so I thought I'd put some thoughts in this thread

1. What the fsck is it with people and the Pope? I swear, they are much worse than a bunch of pre-pubescent girls at a <<Insert engineered boy band name here>> concert! When they catch a glimpse of the old guy, they start crying, falling to their knees, hyperventilating, hugging each other. When a paper quotes them, they say its the climax of their lives, that they never thought it'd happen to them etc etc. WTF? The guy is just....a guy. A glorified priest! I don't get it....

2. Since the pope came here, every damn paper has started resembling a Jehovah witness' pamphlet! Every single day the pope is on the front page, there are page long articles about how he walked down the stairs etc. What's even more is that there are at least 3 pages dedicated (both articles and columns) to telling us how great the pope is, how great the church is, how amazing having faith is, how Jesus loves us, how we need faith, how all the world's problems are caused by lack of faith, how great it is to have faith, how Jesus rocks, how youth should not do drugs, sex and alcohol, but should focus on Jesus the pope being a "living saint" (yes, that is a direct quote) etc etc etc. The people don't bother me, but the fscking media does. Can't wait til everyone leaves.

Now that god seems to condone pedophilia among his most noble chosen ones, they need something to cling to even harder than ever.

Wow, I saw him on TV yesterday... poor guy! He's is REALLY messed up. They ought to allow him to retire or something instead of dragging him around the countryside like a Weekend at Bernie's!

They asked a kid this exact question the other day (on TV).
He said
"he's the pope! He's like, the holiest dude in the world!"

Heh heh heh...nice unplanned pun. ;)

BTW, I actually agree with you. The Pope, IMHO, is a load.

There is the Trinity, not the Trinity and the frikken mailboy.

No way to argue with a well thought out and well articulated opinion like that.

I was replying to HombrePequeno's comments. What does his comments have anything to do with the discussion? Thats why I gave him the big

Good question. I have never understood why Catholics think he is more than a man. Then again w/o the Catholic church we would probably be 200+ year more advance in the sciences.

Well, the man is like, a personified version of everything these people believe in, often times what they base their entire lives around. I agree they go overboard sometimes, but geez, let em enjoy it. What's the harm? As for the media, I guess if you don't like it, don't read it.

For the record, I'm not Christian at all. I just think that people should be allowed to express their ideas, no matter how ridiculous it may sound to another group of people.

"Just a guy?" I was raised Catholic, and to be completely honest, I don't consider him to be much "above" (if any) you or I in any sense of the word, but the guy's got brains, give that to him. True, he doesn't have the looks only teenaged-youth, good lighting and make-up can bring... but when was the last time you considered a person fluent in seven (or more?!) languages, a studious scholar with life-long devotion to his faith, and at the head of a church that still represents the beliefs of a good portion of this Earth's population, just another 75-100-I.Q., minds-his-own-business, gets-his-fruit-at-the-corner-market Joe Nobody?

You may question why girls may scream and lose control when catching a glimpse of this "old fogey," but I find their reactions more thoughtful and less shallow than those who cry and faint at the mere sight of "Joey" from the marketing machine that is "New Boy Band on the Block." You may not agree with what the guy is about, but at least he's got substance and character.

doesn't mean they're not subject to ridicule :p

anyways, i dunno what it is about the pope. i get the feeling it's kind of like when you see a bunch of people rushing up to some guy for an autograph. part of me wants to go up and get one too, even if i don't know who the guy is. i mean, i can always ebay it right? :p

Agreed. It's not any more ridiculous than people who scream and faint over celebrities, and for those who believe it makes a lot more sense.

The problem (to me, at least) is that the Pope uses his influence on world leaders to shape social policy. I do not see why he should be a moral basis for society's laws just because many Catholics see him as some demigod.

what I really don't understand is how it could be possible for people to say he's so much more than any other catholic. I mean, the pope was ELECTED! it wasn't that he was born destined to be the leader of the world's most influential religion (I think). So how come after he gets elected, he suddenly has all this extra holyness -and other religious stuff- eminating from him [as the youths expressed on television]. How come it wasn't there before? how come nobody dropped to their knees and bursted into tears before he was elected. Does that mean the pope acquired these great holy powers after he was elected? that it can be taught? that anyone can achieve this state? that anyone can be the pope? that if someone followed the exact same footsteps as the pope without getting elected, this other person will also make people drop to their knees and cry as well?

I'm not convinced (but then, I can't really criticize something I haven't experienced)

as you can figure out, I'm not a religious person.
