What is it with Japanese cars lately?

The latest Camry looks like complete ass. The Honda Accord is also fugly. The Maxima hasn't looked good since 2003...and it wasn't all that great then. The new Subaru WRX looks like they're trying to reinvent the Toyota Corolla. They've taken a step firmly backward in my opinion. With the exception of some of their luxury divisions I give the latest Japanese cars a solid  in style.

While I'm at it, I'm not a fan of what BMW has done to their cars in recent years either. It's as though they took a turd and slapped kidney shaped fake chrome grills on it. Might as well call it a Pontiac...that's actually an insult to Pontiac since the Solstice looks better than the Z4.

While we're on German cars, it seems as though Mercedes has taken styling cues from the Toyota Camry with some of their sedans lately...what's up with that? 😕

I remain unimpressed with many of the latest designs. Call me crazy.

Discuss.

I like the new Camry design. I saw the 2008 Accord in it looked good (I know rest of ATOT hates it). I think the styling is much better now.

Not pointing towards the OP, but I believe this would happen:
A new cars is to be unveiled by Toyota. But the expo organizers put a Mercedez label on it. 90% of people (incl. critics) will praise the fusion of bold lines and soft curves, the masculine and sporty look. The car will turn heads they will say...

However, if it did carry the Toyota badge the same people will say, wth was toyota thinking this is a ugly looking beast which triers to look sporty and masculine and fails miserably at both....

Brand name is what matters to most people while perceiving design...

No way, Mercedes have no resemblance to Camry's IMO. Camry's look like some sort of bottle nosed whale.

I saw an '08 Accord coupe recently on the road, it was a serious flashback to the '90's. WTF.

Camry used to be bland & utilitarian in looks, now it looks horrible. All the curves don't link together and the wheel wells are much too big for the car.

Bangle ruined BMW for me. The only design I like is the Z4.

Mercedes is classic good looks, the new S-class wheel arches aren't the best though.

Accord for '08, I have not seen in person but the thing looks bulbous and huge!

New Altima looks great. Very handsome!

Agreed. Nissan did a good job with the styling on the new Altima.

I think a large number of cars look ugly these days. They all have a forward rake that makes them look like they just slammed on the brakes even while they're parked, few have clean solid lines that make the shape timeless, and too many have a bunch of design features that don't work with eachother. I'm not going to pick on a single manufacturer because pretty much all of them have been doing that crap.

Have you seen the 2008 C-Class? Looks like someone punched it in the grill.

The next Mazda 6 looks good also. Altima is nice also. Infiniti G37 is nice, but the older one is better, and the G37 looks too much like the Altima coupe now. The Mitsubishi Lancer only looks good because I know what kind of performance they'll get out of it, without the high performance parts it's boring looking. The Lexus IS350 looks pretty good.

Those are the only Japanese cars I can think of that look good. The rest are in the boring to ugly category.

EDIT: Honda S2000 also.
EDIT2: and Mazda RX-8 is interesting.

I disagree, I love the new C-class, and I haven't been a real Mercedes till recently.

I think it all boils down to: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I remember seeing the 1st year of a model and wondering how anyone in their right mind would buy one. After awhile I grew accustomed to the look. I still hate what Bangle did to BMW and have not owned one since but most of the other new styles will grow on me eventually.

Yup.

I've actually grown quite fond of the Dodge Caliber (yeah that's right, Dodge Caliber) in recent weeks, with the right set of wheels it can look pretty sweet.

It's to the point now where Honda and Toyota can do anything they want and get away with it. They make bland, and people buy them. They make ugly, people buy them.
Toyota can poop on sticks and sell them as corndogs.

The rest like Nissan and Mazda have to get a little aggressive to stand out.

And say what you will about the last gen Chrysler Sebring (yeah, not Japanese), but the new one looks utterly horrible.

🙁

Well I still think the g35 looks better but I don't like the looks of the new G37 at all.

Yeah, i saw a G37 on the road (which i thought was a G35 until i looked behind me). It looked too soft, too unenthusiastic, compared to the G35 Coupe. The new G35 looks way better than the old G35 sedan though, which was soft, and ugly, too begin with.
