What is it with Californians and driving in the rain?

Driving back from Santa Clara today to where i live near Palo Alto there must have been about four car accident because of the rain. :Q
Not to mention even if there was no traffic, people still drove around half the speed limit?!? Needless to say, it took me almost an hour to get home when usually it only takes me 15 minutes. :Q I don't know why people here are so afraid of the rain. bah.

Rainy days and Mondays always get me down. :(

Maybe they drive slow because they don't want to be in one of those 4 accidents?

Rain's brutal for traction, obviously.
When you see it glare/mirror, be careful, it's almost like ICE.

Yes, driving slow reduces accidents, but at times is also the reason why accidents happen as well.

When I was in Boston, we had really crappy weather, but i rarely ever saw any accidents due to the weather. :Q

But i come out here and your pretty much guarunteed atleast one or two accidents you'll see if its raining.

Every time we get a rain after months of dry weather, all the oil that drips from the underside of cars comes off in the water and creates an especially slippery roadway. That's why there are so many accidents (people who don't adjust their driving to changed conditions)after such a first rain, and why people with sense and experience drive more slowly. Better an hour late in this would than 50 years early in the next.

Well, it also never rains in California so the people who live here have no clue as to how to drive in it. It's like if someone from down south were to have to drive in snow.

Fizzle, if everybody had the skills you possess then it wouldn't be a problem.

I felt the >exact< same way when I first moved to the bay area a couple years back. After living in Seattle for 20+ years, driving in the rain was second nature. Going down I-5 at 60-70 miles an hour in the rain wasn't too big of a deal. But, the roads here >do< suck. I've heard the reasoning that moonbeam gave from other people, too. Since it sounds logical enough to me, that reason sounds as good as any I've heard. :) Plus, my driving-in-rain-skills are probably lower now. And don't even ask me about how well I drive in the snow now. :) You tend to get a little rusty without practice.

Plus, I've got a RWD car now, and the back end will wiggle sometimes when I take the turn out of the car wash.

RWD + sports tires + rain = time to be careful. :)

btw, where'd you see the accidents? I have to do the same commute soon (Santa clara to Sunnyvale). Maybe I'll stick around work for a while longer if they're big. :)

I wouldn't worry about it now since its stopped raining and also i'm sure the cars are towed or done exchanging info etc.

I saw one on middlefield right next to my house knocked up pretty good in the front.
One on el camino (small collision) near In-N-Out sunnyvale.
One at mountain view.
and one more in menlo park near shell station. (ALWAYS one there for some reason)

MAybe I should start a driving school for crazy people. I usually don't spin on local streets, especially when there are others around.

Large parking lots, gotta love them for learning purposes. I know some people that drift in parking structures! Went for a ride once and I almsot sh!t in my pants!
