you know, the ones who make *crazy* lowball offers like 30-40% less than the current market rate on ebay/CL

I'm just wondering if this is a part of their cultural tradition, and if so, WHY?

haggling is commonplace in china. you never pay the advertized price, evar. unless it's a supermarket or something.

dunno about other asian countries. i've heard the same about india.

Have you ever gone shopping in Asian Markets ?
It's basically a negotiation. You lowball, seller counters. Buyer counters back and eventually get on a mutally agreed price :p

That's because most asians are cheap.

This is my mom trying to negotiate prices at an asian shop or swap meet:
Seller: "That's $5"
My mom: "How about $4?"
Seller: "$4.5"
My mom: "No deal"

lol

LoL.
Most asians aren't cheap.
Atleast not the ones I know.
But in Asia, it's expected that the buyer wil ltry and negotiate.

yeah, I would say its part of the culture. Matter of fact, IMO, 80-90percent chinese would do such a thing. we want business, and we don't care if you die starving. that's why it surprises me that Walmart isn't called Wong's Mart

Hey I'm cheap asian.

I get my cell phones for free. I ask why the rest of the world doesn't do that. V600 free? No problem (1 yr ago). K750i for free? (no problem). I get the craziest deals on my stuff like my Powershot G3 2 yrs ago for $432 when MSRP was like $599 and Fry's had at most a $12 discount even with sales....

So yes, it's culture. Come on, in China, Taiwan or any Asian country you price haggle.

I used to work at an electronics store at Wards when I was going to school and these Asian guys would come up and say '10 percent 10 percent' like we were running bargain hut. I told this to a friend of mine who was working in a car dealership and he started laughing and said that he experienced the same thing with some Asian guys who wanted 10 percent off on the cars.

actually, to clear things up you CANNOT haggle for price in retail stores. You may be able to do so in a small mom&pop store or street vendor, but that's about it.
