What is it that makes the pIII 700 seem so much more OC-able than 750's?

They're both originally for 100 mhz fsb. At 133 you would get 931 vs 997. Is it just price & availability or something to inherent to each chip?

Well, the 700 naturally would be cheaper. Also depending on your chip, you may not be able to get to 1ghz, because the multiplier may be too high. I have heard of a lot of success with the 700-933mhz.

750 is a crap shoot=1 gig. Prolly 50/50.

Intel had probs with the 1 gig and above PIII wise, thus the probs with not issueing the 1 gig PIII's right away, infact, ever heard of a recall, hehe????

933 is well within the range of the 700's though, at least for most of them.

Hope this kinda gives you an answer.

1ghz seems to pretty much be the limit for the p3, at least with the current architecture. the 700, 750, 800 all have 'limit' of 1ghz. the 700 is the cheapest of the bunch. it also has the lowest multiplier, which makes it a better overclocker. it's not uncommon to see p3-500s/550s doing over 800mhz, a 60%+ gain. with a 60%+ gain the p3-700 would hit 1100mhz plus, and the 800mhz would hit 1300mhz. not very likely. hope that helps.

my p3-700 only reaches 1050mhz.

The Intel chips are "multiplier" locked. This means that the multiplier cannot be changed no matter what ( or so we think so far... no solution has been found that can unlock an intel CPU). The way that they calculate the mhz, is they multiply the Front Side Bus times the multipilier, and you will then get a "mhz" number. In this instance, the multiplier is 7X, and the FSB is 100, therefore you will have a 700 mhz processor. Since you can only change the FSB on an Intel CPU, you can usually get up to 133 on a 700mhz cpu. That will give you 133X7, 933mhz.

yah. usually, but not always..

oem - some hit 1000, majority are able to hit 933, few are dead.. (>933(
retail - always 933 usually, but most can hit 1000..
retail + super luck - u get a good core that can do 1.1+

of course,i lucked out.
