What is it like for someone who is 6'5" in the Navy?

My friend is thinking about joining the Navy, but he is 6'5". I know he is too tall to be remotely comfortable in tanks or field artillery in the Army, but I have no idea what sort of space constraints he'd have to deal with on a ship in the Navy.

Anyone have experience in the Navy and can advise whether he'd be miserable or not?

hmmm,
in the air force they make you buy two seats on an airplane. Or was it uniter airlines...

Let's just say he probably won't server on a submarine.

My father-in-law is 6'4", and was career Navy. He served on a destroyer for a period of time, specialized in logistics, and eventually rose to the rank of Vice Admiral.

I knew plenty of people that were around 6'5" in the Navy and they didn't seem to have any problems.

My uncle was in the navy. He made a career of it, but space was tight. He was 6'5" when he went in and 6'3" when he retired.

Yeah, on the old subs. But in the last 15 years Pro basketball players have been on subs.
Lots of tall people in the Navy.
I'm 6'4" 275Lbs all muscle (plus beer gut) I spent 6 years on a Cruiser and a Carrier. Hit my head a few times but that's it.

Your geek is showing 😛

there are some rates (jobs) that rarely do ship duty, he could go for one of those (but they generally have less advancement opportunities than more sea intensive ratings)

about the tallest guy i remember on our submarine was maybe 6-2

i dunno if there is an actual cutoff height for sub duty.

everybody over 5 ft has to duck their head at some point, hatches/water tight doors aren't that big

muahahaha 😛

Koing

I am 6'0" and going through the watertight doors on the Lincoln (CVN-72) was a lot of fun. You have to raise your legs and duck at the same time. If you are in a real hurry you can almost count on barked shins or a knot on your nugget.

When I was at prototype (S3G) I knocked my head many a time. Talk about pain. Steel will just about knock you out every time. 😛

Navy has a substantial # of thier force on ships.

Your friend is waaay to tall for them. have him visit a Naval Mueseum somewhere (i.e. San Diego or NYC). He'll get the point fast about how it is to work on a ship, day in and day out for months on end.

The best place for him is Air Force (non-pilot--not a problem as his height automatically disqualifies him), Army (non-tank) and Marines (if he's the gung-ho type).

How did he like being on a destroyer when he was that tall? He ever say it sucked? 😛

The only things he ever complained about was sleeping near a fan or turbine or something and the 30 second "destroyer showers."
