Do you want exciting (hopefully) new tech or minor tweaks? There has been a lot of complaint about what Ivy Bridge is not.

Take two, unless 1150 is "better" than 1155 there is no reason to upgrade.

Take three, there have been high end motherboard/CPU 1156 going for low prices, might be worth a side grade.

Thanks! Looks like there isn't much of an alternative, since he wants his computer redone within the next two weeks and I'm thinking his budget isn't going to permit the launch products for Trinity. Plus, new motherboards, early BIOS problems, and well, its AMD. If he wants to upgrade the CPU in a couple years, there should be plenty of used SB and IV parts on Ebay.

Avoid the i5Ks, you can't overclock on an H based mobo. I personally was in the same situation as your friend. I ended up ordering a dual core AM3+ cpu and motherboard, paid 70 bucks for mobo+cpu. In a couple of years, I'll be able to buy a used piledriver cpu.
