edit: the feathers. like whoozyerdaddy first said (then tenshodo13), gold is weighed in troy pounds, not the avoirdupois pound which feathers would be weighed. and troy pounds are less than avoirdupois pounds.

10 pounds of feathers are heavier than 10 pounds of gold!

However, an ounce of gold is heavier than an ounce of feathers.

Are you using the same weight scale or is this one of those "Gold is weighed in troy weight" questions?

If you're using troy weight for the gold and avoirdupois weight for the feathers then the feathers weigh more.

It works better if you avoid an actual number in the question.

As in 'a pound of feathers' or 'a tonne of feathers'.

The point to the question is to get people to mis-think in some more 'natural' quantity, rather than weight.

Cliffs notes: you totally blew it!

Here's a good test to see which is heavier. Take the 5 lbs of feathers and drop it on your head. Next take the 5 lb gold bar and drop it on your head. If you haven't figured it out by then keep dropping the 5 lb gold bar on your head till it makes sense.

The troy ounce is the only ounce used in the pricing of precious metals, such as gold, platinum, and silver, and this is the only remaining use of the troy ounce.

A troy pound is 5760 grains (about 373.24 g, 12 troy ounces), while an avoirdupois pound is 7000 grains (about 453.59 g).

5 pounds of feathers + 5 pounds of tar = 10 pounds of flesh burning hilarity

I certainly hope your previous 1875 posts were better than this one.

Somehow I kinda doubt it though :(

since you didnt specify what kind of pounds, the assumption has to be made its the standard lb that is approximately 0.45359237 kg.

Gold doesnt have to be weighed in terms of troy pounds. I weigh out gold here in the lab all the time with a normal scale. You never see any papers that say they sputtered 1 troy ounce of gold onto their substrate... its always measured in milligrams.

Edited for retardedness

If he'd said an ounce of each, he would be right though.
