What is going on?

My gf's sis has moved in with us so she can get her feet off the ground. I had her sign on to our network so she would not have to snoop for another. About a minute after she gets assigned an IP, the network gets slowed down ALOT. SO much that I cannot even access the router itself to look at the settings. I tried throttling down the whole wireless network to 2Mps max, but the network still becomes congested. What is going on here? How can one wireless laptop just congest my network so much?

My router is a Moto WR850G with DDWRT.

BTW, I am wired to the network.

dphantom's answer was the first one that came to mind for me. I suppose another possibility is that your router and the laptop wireless NIC are operating in mixed mode (e.g. one G, one B) which may cause the router to operate at the slower speed, or the manufacturers aren't playing nicely with each other.

Virus, trojan worm?

You should run antivirus on it as soon as possible.

Until you know what's going onI would take her computer off the network asap. And if you know that her computer is the culprit, don't hook it up to anything. Who knows what it's doing to your network.

Hmmm....well...I did not think of that. I hope that is not the issue.

She is not computer savy at all. She lost her phone, so it looks like i cannot tell her to get off the ntetwork.

I did notice she was downloading stuff like crazy (looked like p2p)...so this is probably it. My computer is the only other thing that is turned on that is connected. If I do get fubared by this, i was gonna format my computer anyways.

Yeah if she's downloading like crazy that's probably it. However, even if she stops you will still want to check things over. Main reason being is she could have downloaded something that wasn't safe. THAT my friend, happens to us all. 😉
