Most of the really fucked up shit happened a long time ago. If you look at some statistics, you actually see that most forms of crime have been on the decline for some time now. Every single one that happens now just gets lavished by media attention.

That's ok though. As crime declines a stronger and stronger spotlight should be shined on the ones that remain. The less permeated by evil that our society becomes, the more aberrant and disgusting, and thus more newsworthy, the evil that is still around will necessarily seem.

Pretty much this. People need to realize that we live in the absolute best time in all of human history that one could be alive. We all won the life lottery.
