i'm ordering something online and it says "$1.52 FOB Irvine"

what does FOB Irvine mean? I tried to look it up, but only found it has something to do with purchasing or shipping

it's something to do with when you take responsibility for the package. can't remember what it stands for. Maybe I should have checked gopunks link first :)

FOB = Free on board. There are two different FOB's.. FOB destination and FOB origin. In your case, it would be FOB origin. Meaning the seller is trying to tell you that the item you are purchasing is shipping out of Irvine. People usually use FOB to let the buyer know that they are trying to negotiate the shipping cost on a large item.

FOB = Free On Board. (Hmm... I always thought it was Freight On Board, but looking it up in three places it's Free On Board.)

Basically, it indicates when responsibility for the item transfers from shipper to recipient.

In simple terms, it determines who is going to pay the freight charge. kt is correct. If the shipper is located in Irvine, then you will pay freight charges from Irvine to your location. FOB is more of a business to business term than business to consumer.

Edit: Also, when you see FOB and you are located in the area, it typically means you can arrange to will-call the item.
