What is firmware, and do I need it?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is firmware a driver of some kind? Ive been looking at the HP support site with little luck finding anything about firmware. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks for all the help....and sorry if this is a "stupid" question.

Firmware is like a bois. Cd-RWs have then routers have them well everything I guess would have them or they wouldn't work.

Firmware is a term used for low level, hardware specific code. Could also be known as microcode. A BIOS is not a good example as it uses regular X86 instructions.
