I have 2 Micron PC's w/ Socket 7 MB. i need to replace the 166mhz pc w/ something at least 266, which i've been told is the required minimum of Windows XP.

anyway, bottom line, what is the fastest processor i can put in this thing.

it has FSB of 66 and Max multiplier of 5.5

i don't want to OC at all.

You might be able to put a k62 350Mhz in it or a bit higher possibly. I wouldn't advise running WinXP on it though cause you will have to add alot of ram and it will work like crap. What do you want to do with these two machines since you have an AMD XP and a P4 already?

not for me. it's for a client.

he uses them as workstations. i'll probably terminal client into the server and run apps of server.

they have 128 mb of ram, so should be sufficient.

one runs but is really slow, the other keeps freezing up on me.

Spectra 400 mhz (upgrade processor from Evergreen) its a K6-2 with it's own voltage regulator.

For the price of that Evergreen, you can pick up a new mobo/proc combo from TG or something...

If the mobo supports it, a K6-3+ 450 or K6-2+ 450. You need 2V Vcore. The 2x jumper is remapped to 6x, so you'd be @ 400 MHz.

<< 5.5 x 66 = 366mhz

assuming it supports K6-2's.

K6-2/3's internally remap the 2X multiplier for 6X, so one could easily pop in a 400MHz K6-3 and run it at 66x6 using the 2X multiplier if the board has support for the K6-2/3.

Windows XP will run on a slower PC than a 266mhz, but will be sluggish. I had it running on a pentium 200, but it was alittle slow.
