Let's see.. Sockets 1-3 would be 486 class.. so my guess would be either a DX2-66(or 80 if 40MHz bus is allowed), or an OverDrive 100 if such a chip is available.

I'd have to double-check as it's been a while since I've worked with Socket3.

EDIT: The chart at this LINK should give you the help you need. As I suspected there might be, there is an OverDrive solution of 100 MHz available.

I think the DX4-100 topped it out if memory serves me at all. There were some overdrive processors around for socket 3 but I can't remember much about them. Maybe one of IDT winchip series?

Depending on the board, you MAY get away with a 133 (AMD made one, and I think there was an Intel 486DX/133 as well, I can't remember)

<< For the newer motherboards with a white 237 pin PGA OverDrive socket (Socket 3: 3.3 V, 5 V), that do satisfy the heat specifications, there will be an Intel Pentium CPU at 3.3 V with a ventilator on the IC. >>

Might be some kind of a lead here.

<< Socket 3, 237 pin LIF/ZIF PGA (19x19), 3.3/5v, 25-50 MHz 486 SX, 486 DX, 486 DX2, 486 DX4, DX4 & Pentium Overdrive. Supports 5V & 3.3V processors, considered the latest 486 socket >>

A little bit more from here

<< Pentium OverDrive Processors for Intel486?Processor-Based Systems Pentium OverDrive processors for upgradable Intel486 processor-based PCs will allow most Intel486 PC users to upgrade to Pentium processor technology. >>

More details here.

ok so 133 is max then, for the 2 free motherboards, both with 486dx66's in them now. one works. one might.
i had a AMD486/133 once, first thing i ever built
i'll try that linux seti boot disk in em

edit
thanks
i got more and quicker here than in cpu section

<< 160MHz is also selectable, but is above the official rated frequency for the AMD AM486DX5-133 (133MHz) processor. >>

i don't care if i burn it up, what a luxury! :)
