What is fast write?

Enabling this feature, does it slow down the performance of games? What are the advantages and disadvatages of fast write?

It speeds up performance, but if you get any problems (freezing, display inaccuracies), disable it. As far as I know, it gives the CPU direct access to the video card, or something...

Supposed to, but it has no affect on my performance. (Radeon8500)
