What is fair pay for a teacher?

I got in an argument with my manager the other day about the pay a teacher receives. I teach middle school math and bartend at night. He says if anything teachers are overpaid because of all the vacation they get and anyone can do their job. I countered by saying that it takes more than just a college degree(which he doesn't have)to be an effective teacher and we have some brilliant teachers at our school who can't teach to save their lives. I make around 40 grand a year teaching which is okay but wish it were higher. Thoughts?

If you are making 40K, that's decent and fair wage with the exception of if you live in an extremely high COL area. My mother is a teacher, she tutors, does summer schoo, and does paying workshops during the summer to augment her salary.

I'd say $40k isn't bad for 9 months out of the year. That's $53k/year if you worked 12months. You also get 2 weeks off for Christmas, get to set a lot of your own rules in the classroom, and you have control over the lives of a lot of kids. Seems like fair pay to me.

Humans should desire to learn above all else....so teachers should get paid more than anyone else...unfortunately, we value money much more than knowledge, so the market for teachers isn't that great, and they don't get paid all that much


P.S. I am not a teacher, nor would i ever have the patience to be one, I just think they should get paid more

i agree that 40k$ a year isnt all that bad.

considering you do get 3 months off in summer, a lot of holidays, esp. w/ christmas break...

but i guess the pay varies depending on where you live.

WTF! $100,000 maybe in some rich highschool.

A teacher that has been teaching for 20+ years makes a little over $60k in Socal (LA county unified)

oh man! that would piss me off to no end. both my parents are teachers, i student taught for several years and my girlfriend is just starting her first classes in a month.

teachers are underpaid. they have one of the most demanding, least respected and honored positions in this country. when someone mentions the hours/vacation time i get so angry. while it is technically true teachers are only required to be working for a certain amount of time, the time needed to create lessons, grade assignments and prepare for class are much higher than other jobs. this doesnt even begin to scrape the surface of the time and effort it takes to be a teacher.
teachers do a lot of work outside that building.

True but you really can't use the 12 month argument because I don't have the opportunity to make $53K a year.

IMO teachers deserve more but there also needs to be stricter standards as a result. Too many fricking morons are educating our kids these days.

If it paid at least 75K a year I'd teach. (Not gonna happen in CA, ever)

I think good techers are horribly underpaid. As far as I know, most of the school teachers I've talked to make almost nothing compared to what their talents allow. That is the real reason we don't have enough good teachers: we don't pay them enough to convince them to not go into other areas of work.

At this very moment, I'm talking with two project managers here in Austin who have a combined total of 30 years classroom experience in Texas ISDs. Another project manager with PhD sits over in a corner.

The questions are: How many years of experience do you have? Do you have a Masters?

You can get a summer job. In 3 months at $10/hour you can pick up an extra $5200.

It's the truth though. With the standards today, a high school dropout who got his GED could perform the duties of a high school teacher.
