what is extended memory?

so in my quest for a reasonbable laptop, I've found the Fujitsu E series. While configuring, I'v remembered to upgrade from 20 gig to 30 gig, 128 megs of ram to 256 megs of ram, and also include that wireless mouse 😉

There is anohter upgrade that I don't know if I should add in. They ask if I want to add "extended memory." I can add 128megs of extended memory for 71 dollars extra. Now what is extended memory? what is it's functions? Are we still talking about ram here, or is this something else? what can extended memory do to my laptop?
 
The term extended memory came from the old DOS days, Expanded Memory was the area (logically) in your RAM that was beyond the expanded memory, anything that was beyond 1MB was considered expanded, at that was memory that had to be specifically addressed by programs or set by parameters in config files. My guess is that when they say, extended they just mean more than what was originally inside the machine. Extended in this case probably is just their term for the extra memory. If you are running Windows 95,98, or ME. Don't bother, that much RAM will slow you down. Any NT based OS and you will benefit from extra, were talking 2000 or XP. Judging by your icon if you are running Linux than I don't know what to tell you, I don't know how the UNIX base addresses and manages memory.
