Why not the retailer first? If they'll cover it for that long you're good to go, things should be faster than going through the manufacturererererer.
 
I don't /really/ know how the law is in the US, but on the very forefront, it is the retailer's responsibility to sell you non-broken goods, just like handing over good money is the customer's duty.
For example here in Germany, any manufacturing defect that shows up within a year is the retailer's problem.
