What is Ebay's policy for cancelling bids?

I was bidding on some IDE cables. Surprisingly, the seller decided to cancel it. There were no other bids. Here is the auction in question: link

The seller did not even give a proper reason why he chose to cancel the bid. I understand if the seller somehow lost the items, but if I see this item pop up again on his listing, I'd be royally pissed.

Me, too.

Uh, contact ebay while you wait. If he canceled it after the auction or with a couple seconds left, he obviously did it because he didn't get what he was hoping for which is against ebay's TOS.

I do this all the time to 0 and -1 FB buyers, or douchebag buyers.

I think they can cancel for whatever reason. I'm a low FB buyer, but no negatives, so I usually drop the seller a note that I'm a legit buyer and to contact me if they want to ask me any questions, and that usually stops them from canceling my bids. I just dont buy on Ebay very frequently, nor do I ever sell anything on there, so it makes some sellers nervous.

I just got a response from the seller. I am very impressed with the seller's promptness and honesty.

Thanks for your inquiry.
We apologize for canceling the auction. Unfortunately we had no choice in the matter as there was an error in the listing.

The item listed, 10 NEW ATA133 + Floppy + EIDE Cable Kits, was counted as overstock/backstock by one of our employees during our 2007 year end inventory process. Unfortunately we found later that the count was in error and that the item in question did not actually exist. Therefore we had no choice but to cancel the auction since we cannot sell what does not exist in inventory.

Please accept our sincere apologies in this matter. We have previously never encountered a problem such as this, and are taking firm steps to see that it never again occurs. As part of that process we have implemented a policy whereby all items to be sold on eBay, no matter how small or how many times the computer inventory has been reviewed, must be physically present and physically documented before being listed.

Please keep us in mind for future bulk wholesale lots. Although most of our inventory is sold locally, we do expect to be listing more bulk wholesale lots on eBay in the forthcoming months.

Thanks again for your inquiry.
Best Regards,
Nexus Computers

the guy cancelled all the bids just before the auction ended. he said "i just found out the camera is broken" , yeah, like it broke all of a sudden five minutes before the auction ends, sure

My question is why is it such a big deal? You can find these things for a dime a dozen....
