German was extremely easy for me to learn. Of course it helped that my dad works for a German company.

Eventually I'll have to learn Spanish for the new position I just took. Hopefully, it will be as easy as German was for me.

If I'm not mistaken, english is more closely related to german than it is to spanish. Not sure if that makes much difference in leaerning them, though.

I took Spanish (and became pretty fluent if I do say so myself) in HS so am biased toward it. Really found the culture & history of Spain and Latin American countries fascinating as well, made learning the language itself more enjoyable. Of course now, a decade later, I don't remember jack sh*t :p

I hated spanish with a passion and was not at all interested in the spanish culture when I took the class for 3 years in High school. In college I've signed up for German. Hopefully it will be much better, because I think I would die if I had to take another year of spanish.

English is a Germanic language. Most of the people here should learn English first though.

German...it's a Germanic language which makes it quite similar to English in structure.

I think Spanish is easier to learn because I live in Southern California. More people speak Spanish and you hear/see more spanish ads/shows so naturally it wasn't very hard to pick up. Not that I'm very good at it...

The structure of German, it's grammar, is NOT AT ALL like English -- anyone who says so doesn't know the first thing about German.

Spanish would be easier to learn but I prefer German. I learned Spanish in College and German in Germany.

German is much harder, trust me, I've learned 6 languages (English, Russian, German, Latin, Spanish, French) of which Latin was the hardest followed by German. Russian was the easiest followed by English and then Spanish.

German is a lot more similar to english than you seem to think. First off, english is a western germanic language. It has a lot closer relationship to german than spanish. It has a lot of the same grammatical structures (past/present forms, etc). I don't know that english resembles any other language quite as closely, except the other western germanic languages. Obviously, it's not as close of a tie as spanish/italian/portuguese.

I'd say german is probably a little easier, but I would study spanish mainly if I could do it over again. It's a lot more useful language.

I used to work for a speech tech company. I say Spanish is way easier, but, OTOH, that's not counting that you know English. :D I don't know much about German, but everyone I know who knows either or both says Spanish is easier.

I know spanish and find it more helpful. When I went to Italy and France I found that alot of spanish words are the same in those languages with some variations. I was able to get around pretty well especially in Italy.

IMO, German is a lot harder to learn than English.
I have no idea how complicated the Spanish grammar is, but German is pretty complex, there are much more rules than in English.

Having been a student of German language and culture for almost 10 years and an employee of the German government for almost 1 year, I would say that German is the harder language to learn.

Which is more valuble? If you plan on doing business in the States, especially in CA, TX, or FL, Spanish is a must. If you plan on working in the automotive or chemical industries, I'd say learning German is a good idea. In fact, part of what my office does is go to companies like Porsche NA to teach their employees German.

Either way, learning a foreign language is a good move. It expands your understanding of the world around you. Pick one and stick with it!
