what is DVDRAM

Yup, it can write and rewrite DVDs, but you can't play them on any other devices. Pretty lame! The newer technologies are DVD-R and DVD+RW. These ones also let you write DVDs but their disks are much more likely to be compatible with standalone DVD players and DVD-ROM drives.
 
A DVD-RAM drive can read CD-Roms and some can read DVDs (movies).

To record on a DVD-RAM drive you must have the recordable DVD-RAM media. Looks like a big hard cased floppy (it does not look like a regular DVD). Typically you can record 2.6GB per side.

Very handy for large files. Downside is only other systems with DVD-RAM drives can utilize this media.
