What is digital phone?

Hi all,

Recently time warner has been running commercials here about "digital phone" service. For under $40 a month. They are saying there are never long distance fees within the united states, and offer to throw in a lot of service at no cost (call waiting, caller ID, etc.). I don't know if they are only doing it here or if it is nationwide.

I'm wondering - does anyone know exactly what "digital phone" is? Is it some new technology, or is time warner moving in to the phone business?

Also - is there any catch here? I call long distance quite a lot... would be nice if it's as they say.

Hmmm... Ok I've read a bit about this. Am I right in thinking that if your internet connection goes out so does your phone?

If you use a service such as vonage, in the event that your internet goes down, you can forward all your calls to another number such as your cell phone. I have vonage and it works great.

I had comcast digital phone before I got Vonage. It's not the VOIP that is like vonage, callvantage,packet8, and the other ones. You don't get a unit inside your house. When comcast did my house they played around in the phone box on the house. Not sure exactly what they did but they took the lecs phone wires off and put their own on so that all the phones would ring as it was before. The call quality never suffered whenever downloading like vonage sometimes does, and I don't believe that the cap was effected. Downloads always seemed to be the max.
