What is Digg?

A site that can be easily manipulated to get a lot of traffic to your site, and frequently is manipulated to point to pages with google ads. Basically, anybody can submit anything, and if enough people say they like it, it gets to the front apge, which has very high traffic. The users are, in general, ridiculously pro-apple and anti-microsoft.

People often submit links to their blog entries about a site, which are just links to that site... rather than just linking to the site directly. Also, stories often show up repeatedly (I suspect submitters link to their blogs rather than directly to the site of interest partly to get around digg's duplicate-detection which tries to reduce the number of duplicate submissions).

They occasionally link to cool stuff (cool in this case because I wrote that 🙂). I got over 30k hits to the page.

nice!!

It's a "tech news" site that it mostly populated by 15 year old Apple fanboys who can't tell the difference between real news and viral marketing. Because of that, 95% of the articles posted to it suck.

The comments section sucks too. They might as well label the thumb down button "I disagree!"

It's the source of 1/2 of the threads in ATOT, another 1/4 comes from Fark and the other 1/4 is the stupid sh1t that PAB posts.

I hate how the comments on Digg, Reddit, etc. are rated. People bury stuff they don't agree with even if it is interesting or well argued.

People also reply to stuff that's at the top just so that their reply also ends up near the top.

Digg has it's problems, but it's easily the best and fastest news source on the net. Between them, /. and Fark, I get 95% of my news. The other stuff comes from OT.

Slashdot wannabes

Sounds about right. Judging from the comments, I'd say that the average Slashdotter is about 10 years older and 20 IQ points smarter than the average Digg user.

😀

Not sure why people are hung up on the comments - Digg is probably the best source of the broadest range of subjects and new articles on the net. Even 95% of slashdot comments are 100% completely useless, not to mention decent percentage of slash's articles are useless geek-stroking nerdporn as well.

It might be entertaining on occasion, but it's rarely educational. Hell... Most of the posts are false rumors and blog spam with links to questionable news stories.
