I went to newegg and was going to puchase an Intel Pentium 4 cpu... 1.6ghz... but i am confused... there's

1. INTEL PENTIUM 4 1.6GHz 400MHz SOCKET 478 PROCESSOR - RETAIL W/Fan. 256K. W/O RAMBUS RAM

and

2. Intel Pentium 4 1.6A GHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus- RETAIL version. With / Heatsin & Fan

i am confused by the A in the second description, and the "without rambus" stuff, and the 400mhz versus the 512K description.

... all i want is a 1.6 P4 CPU along with the heatsink and fan all in a retail box to install onto a 478 socket motherboard. nothing fancy.

sorry for asking what might be naive questions. thanks for any help.

1.6A : Northwood core, .13 micron 512kb level2 cache
1.6 : Wilamette core, .18 micron 256kb level2 cache

if that don't make any sense to you try this: 1.6a is the newer version, it runs cooler, it is also faster. One other thing about the 1.6A - it overclocks like a mother, just like any of the new version pentium4s. All the newer version pentium4s have an 'A' at the end of their ghz rating, and are also somtimes labeled as Notrthwood and having 512kb level2 cache.

help?

" am confused by the A in the second description, and the "without rambus" stuff, and the 400mhz versus the 512K description."
- "A" means it is the newer Northwood CPU with a bigger on die cache i.e. 512K (and also amazing overclockability even though you do not care).
- No A means the older Wiliamette core with 256K cache.
- Without Rambus stuff means that previously Intel was trying to peddle Rambus memory with their CPUs to get Rambus to sell. With the advent of P4 motherboards supporting DDR this is no longer necessary
- 400MHz buzzword to reflect the P4 architecture - Quadpipelines

... all i want is a 1.6 P4 CPU along with the heatsink and fan all in a retail box to install onto a 478 socket motherboard. nothing fancy.
Yeah I do not blame you.

Not Naive at all take a look at the motherboards offerings from ASUStek for example - somebody is smoking something in the east and maybe in NA.

1.6A at stock speeds would probably be as fast as a 1.8 willamette. Because in all the benches Ive seen, a 2.0A would be like 20 more FPS in quake 3, etc, so in the charts an XP 1800 would be faster than a 2.0 willamette, but the 2.0A would be faster than the XP and the 2.0 willamette.

And 'cos you seem the paranoid type ...

Intel does cover the Fan AND the Heatsink (as well as the CPU) with the 3 year warranty. Just in case you wondered. Just make sure you keep ahold of your "proof of purchase" :).

Enjoy ... :D.
