What is difference between 2 kinds of Athlon 3500 (read)

I went to Fry's Electronic this morning to take a look at Athlon 3500 sale (with a mobo) but was aiming for Athlon 3500 CPU tho.

I was aiming for AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1GHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Model ADA3500BPBOX but however...

When I asked what Model # for the Sale CPU, and I got this model #ADA3500DAA4BW

So I got confused and asked whats difference - he said the Sale CPU is Bare CPU.

Okay .. he was not very customer friendly at all so I was annoyed and too many customers so decided left and would do research on it.

Hope you guys can tell me what the difference between those 2 model numbers?

He did answer your question. The sale one is an OEM CPU, which means that it doesn't come with the stock heatsink/fan (and usually a shorter warranty (90 days?). The one you were looking for was the retail boxed version that comes with a longer warranty (3 years I believe) and the retail heatsink/fan.

if you buy the sale one from Fry's, you'll need to buy the heatsink/fan separately.

Okay almost identical between those 2 models except for "stepping" one is E3 and other E6 - will have to look up the definition of "stepping" but thanks for the link!

Ayup he did answer but that is it.. very short and sweet "Bare CPU" and that is it, he turns to other customers. I was not even finished with him cause I dont get it "Bare CPU" then got fustrated with him cause he wasnt very customer friendly, not even staying with me til I am done or even explaining the difference.

But you *explained* which was VERY helpful! so I thank you. now I understand the meaning of Bare CPU.
