Trying to find the current stepping for retail 2600K's...feeling like a google noob, everything I find that has a screenshot of the IHS shows it to be an ES.
Anyone know offhand what the stepping is for retail 2600k's?
LOL, thank you so much pm! I'm laughing because I had actually looked at that page, up and down, before making the thread and never saw the "Steppings" hyperlink on the left.
Well at least I was in the right place, google didn't fail me, my age did!
Yup, D2.
Anybody else find it amazing that they went through 4 major revisions before launch and still managed to launch roughly on time?
Its like they knew what they were doing or something.
how often do new steppings come out? Is it more of a "hey, we still need some of you guys who worked on this node to update the chips until a new line comes out" or is it more of a only fix broke stuff thing?

The real answer is somewhere between both. With newer processors (i.e. the past three generations) they tend to come out with 1-2 new steppings within a few months after initial launch. Sometimes they'll wrap it in a new product line though, like with Core 2 processors 1333Mhz bump. Each revision does correct errors in the core though most of us will likely be none the wiser.
