What is Cheating?

Dari

Lifer
I'm asking this question because I think it begs to be discussed.

Is cheating the breaking of implicit or explicit rules settled between two couples?

Is it the sharing of something intimate with someone other than your partner?

Since there is a double standard between men and women, is there a higher threshold for men?

Is agreeing to temporarily separate from your partner ("need some time alone") so you can be with someone else cheating?

Do you make up rules at the beginning of every relationship? What constitutes "intimate"? Isn't the line blurry in that sense? It's subjective, to say the least.

yes, I think this is just a justification to cheat on someone, and proves you don't really care for them.

No, but anyone who'd do that is an ass and not worth dealing with again.

I agree with what Mugs said. Im only 19 right now but everytime ive heard a friend say they were taking a break from each other, they never end up getting back together. To temporarly split up like that is just a way to do it without really confronting the other person.

(time alone is a bunch of bs, either break up or stay together) but in any case, its still cheaitng. You're just letting them know about it. What kinda crap is: Oh I love you, but I want to have sex with other people before I know for sure that I want to stay with you

Interesting responses. There must be a lot of women in this forum. Seeing that men and women are physiologically and psychologically different, I would've expected different answers for the third question.

There's a couple women, it's mostly men. Maybe you expected the wrong answer?

On one level perhaps. When you get down to it, "No" the standard is the same.

No. Its a agreement.
(my answers in bold)

I was expecting women to be more forgiving of men since we are different creatures in spite of what the law says. Historically, men have done it far more often than women because of our drive to populate the earth. I guess I was wrong.

I disagree. I think women have done it more than men. ESPECIALLY in history.

That's news to me. Any studies/links? I was postulating my sentence as a truism. Your sentence comes as a surprise.

It is much more normal for a woman to cause 2 men to fight over her than the other way around. I would never dream of cheating on a woman, but I've had 2 do it to me. Men are more concerned with honor and dignity when it comes to romance, or at least should be. I find men who are not like that to be the exception, not the rule. Woman was made for man, and man should cherish the gift.

These are really really girly questions, can't understand a single one of them.

Translate into man-speak for me please.

If you see a strange woman walking down the street and hit it, did you cheat on your GF/Wife?

if your heart is somewhere else, either physically or mentally / emotionally - it's cheating imho.

esp. if you're hiding it from your SO.

That is so true.
If anyone disagrees they are WRONG. No question.

Maybe---depends on the rule.
Maybe---"intimate" is too vague a word
Maybe---"higher threshhold" for what? In my experience Men/Women can sometimes over react to certain things involving their partners and the opposite sex and consider them somehow outside acceptable practice
Maybe---Has the "being with someonne else" clearly stated or just the :time alone"? The first, NO. The second, definitely.

Any time one partner does anything behind the others back, while knowing it would hurt the relationship or the other partner, it is cheating.

Well...I guess it would be cheating if my wife likes being hit too.
