Internet works fine except when you try to "sign in" somewhere. They get a "The Page cannot Be Displayed" message. This happens at any site when you try to log on (bank, school web site, etc.) Any ideas as to what is going on?

First of all, check that port 443 (HTTPS) isn't blocked using 'telnet' command and report back.

Run Spybot and Adaware after you fix the Host file.
Yep, I've had clients with this problem before and it was spyware related. Don't forget to run CWShredder as well.

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the slow response. I only have a little time to look at the computer. So far i've only uninstalled a bunch of worthless programs and run ad aware and spy bot. Ad aware found 436 objects (yikes!) and spy bot found 47 more.

No router or firewall (i don't think, will double check) running winXP Pro. Computer has DSL through SBC/Yahoo. I will run CWShredder and check on port 443 in the next few days. Any other suggestions welcome, i'll report back in a few.
