What is causing my lag/choke in online games?

Whenever I play CS my screen lags sometimes and I freeze. I unfreeze with a bullet in the head alot. Its driving me crazy. My isp is verizon dsl 1.5/384. I have a belkin 4 port router that I am using. Does anyone know what could be causing this sort of thing to happen and what I can do to fix it? Or is it possible that something is eating up my upload that I am unaware of?

get on a server with a better ping to you. that has happened to me, when on some servers where my ping wasnt too great. just find one with a better ping. or get a better ISP 🙂

I was having the same problem, and changed the rate to something like 9999999 and the choke dropped to zero, and everything's been smooth.

ok i will adjust settings...and i think if i'm getting loss/choke shouldn't i be lowering cmd/update rate?

Type net_graph 1 or net_graph 3 (and net_graph 0 to disable it) in the console. This will show you what your connection is doing.

1 will give you a graphical representation, 3 will give you more stats like choke.

What disclaimer, "I'm a crybaby bitch and don't appreciate the fact that CS is notorious for lagspikes if not properly configured?"

Open the ports, enable UPnP on the router, or even toss yourself in the DMZ to see if that alleviates the problems.

If someone on the home network is uploading while you're playing, you'll lag. Make sure no one is using BT, KaZaa, or other P2P programs.

Um, not really. That's only gonna work on a great connection. Keep lowering updaterate and cmdrate until your choke mostly goes away. If you have loss that is a problem with the internet connection somewhere.

I run 20000/40/40 if I remember right.

1st of all i've been playing for years and this is the first time this prob has occured frequently...second of all i've played w/ friends of every division from o-i so i've tried most of the rate setting...i am posting on at for a more technical perspective
