What is causing memory leak in Win2k?

I've been getting "low on virtual memory" errors recently. A friend said I had a memory leak, but I don't really understand what this is.

I have a P3 700e and 128mb PC100 RAM. Initial paging file size is 192mb and max is 374mb.

I've read other threads on that told me how to set the paging file, but I want to know why memory is "leaking". I only had a few apps running the last time I got this error and it happened while I was away from the computer. Anyone know why or have other suggestions to keep from getting this error?

Thanks

More importantly, what 3rd party software is installed. This is the #1 reason to leaks (bad software engineering).

No beta drivers. I haven't updated any drivers in the past few months and this has only been a problem recently.

3rd party software?

You say "recently"??? Have you checked for viruses? Or maybe you have too many programs running at the same time recently ^^

no viruses

One virtual memory error happened when I was away from my computer and only ircN and echo were running. There were a few things running in the tray (AIM, ICQ) but nothing memory intensive. I came back into my room and the error was on the screen.
Before I could have several IE windows open, ircN and outlook running, and be playing need for speed without any problems.

I have 780mb allocated for the paging file accross 3 HD's but I got the error again last night.
