What I'm really trying to figure out is how to make my wife happy by buying a cat and how to make me happy by being able to play fetch with it.

If anyone has any other suggestions as to what are good breeds of cats please chime in. As long as it's not long-haired I'm all ears.

If you try to play fetch with your cat, it'll simply laugh at you. Then it'll scratch out your eyeballs.

Siamese. I have a mixed breed siamese cat, she has most of the characteristics of a siamese (Blue Eyes, Seal Point Coat, The Meow) but she has a round head, short legs, short neck and shes fat. Everyone who sees her goes oh how pretty. I'm kinda partial to Siamese cats.

Hehehe, Siamese cats are real meowers! :p But they are very bright, so if you want to teach it to play fetch... it would probably catch on. I would suggest teaching it to come to you first, and using kitty treats as the reward. Then you can teach it to bring something back after you throw it, I'd suggest a rolled up sock or mouse toy.

Liar! My cat DOES play fetch. I throw his favorite pink jingle-ball across the room and he goes running after it. Then he picks it up in his mouth and carries it back to me and drops it in front of me. He's the best! His name is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Since you have narrow down to short hair cat, check out each breed personality and traits.
Pick out one that is most suited to your personality.
I would suggest of adopting instead of buying a cat.
They already got their health check and neutered or spayed.
One thing to remember though, cats are harder to get them to play with you than dogs.

I know that sounds funny but I bring it up because my friend had a huge cat that was born from an orange tabby and it used to play fetch (as well as doing things like attacking the vacuum cleaner)... as a matter of fact it looked a lot like BMdoobieW's cat.

So I figured if doobie's got one then there must be more and sure enough I was lookin some kitty personality profiles and according to this this website there are at least four different breeds of cat that enjoy a rousing game of fetch.

Those things are huge. I think another big one is the Russian Blue.

We have had a few siamese cats that would play fetch with cigarette pack wrappers.

Just get one from your local animal shelter, as someone else suggested.

My cat plays fetch too- only when she wants to though. She brings me the toy the first time, runs after it, then stares at me untill I go get it and toss it again.:D

I love cats. They're great to have as pets. But the two I have are rather peculiar. For one, they seem to think that if you wake them up in the middle of the day for any reason, they've got to return the favor at night. Never had any cat seem revenge like these two. Sheesh. But I still love them. :)

Ragdoll's are one of the biggest domesticated breeds. They get to 25+ pounds (mine got to about 28).

Get a Maine my excellent compatriot Cat, they rule.
Mine is about 20 pounds or so...maybe bigger. :)

he is very intelligent and likes to play, a word of advice, get the front claws removed. On a cat this big, he likes to tear things up, and if he freaks out someone is liable to get cut.

Here are some pics of the freak next to my 8 year old daughter for size reference. :D

You can see my giant tabby tomcat, Don Vito Corleone, in my sig (I am not named after him, exactly, but I started using Don_Vito as a handle for online gaming years ago, and it stuck). He is about 17 pounds, and not at all fat, making him the biggest non-fat cat I have ever seen. He also has extra toes on his front feet.

He has been fetching (Q-tips, mostly) since he was a kitten, and has created entire games with surprisingly complex rules. For example, when I had roommates, we had a mantle over our couch. He would get up there, and we would throw him seals from Odwalla juice (a very high-end juice sold on the west coast - it comes in small bottles which used to have a tear-away seal). He would take turns batting them down from one person to the other. If you caught it and threw it back up, he would keep playing. If you couldn't catch it, you were out for that round, and he would ignore it if you threw up to him. Just amazing. He is clever in ways that I have never seen in a domestic animal - he seems to have the brain of a monkey.

For what it's worth, a Japanese friend told me when I got him that tabby cats with a swirl pattern like Vito (as opposed to the more common tiger stripes) are the most prized pets in Japan, because they are supposed to have the best temperment. God knows he is amazing, and as loyal and kind as a good hunting dog.

One last thing - if you want a big, active cat, you really want a male. I have had a number of each, and male cats tend to be friendlier, more athletic, and larger. YMMV, of course, but that has been my experience.

Siamese!

My Siamese cat played fetch with white plastic bottle caps (the ones from 20oz soda's and 2 liter bottles). He also weighed 22 pounds (big for a siamese even). Siamese are the most intelligent of house cats. You will hear people say the are aggressive and mean, but what they really are is strong and muscular.

I have heard good things from Siamese owners, but I can't deal with the constant vocalizing. I love cats but don't really want to hear them all the time.

I have owned 8 different cats. Siamese are to damn moody. One minute they are your friend, and the other they are trying to rip your eyeballs out. The cat I have now is a orange and white striped tabby named Dink. He is the best cat I have ever had.

He even beats up my 130 pound dogs:D hahaha
