What is better S-video or Component Video??

my Sony DVD player has both
which one should i use?? with my Mitsubishi 16:9 55" HDTV??
and what is the difference??
and for the component do i need special cable or will regular RCA cables do??

Component Video is technically, visually, and practically the better picture. I wouldn't even dream of watching something in S-Video.
you will in fact need special cables. A 2m monster component video cable is about $60-$70 at best buy, maybe cheaper online.

S-Video is about 20% better that composite while component is 25% better than composite...

component is better, but if your TV is like 32 and under, you probably won't notice a difference. Component only really shines on big TV's.

Whatever you do, don't use composite! Composite is crap.

S-video is a huge leap from composite video in every way. Component video is only slightly better than S-video IMO but still well worth using if you can...better color definition is the main difference I have noticed.

componenent has a higher color bandwith from what I've heard, but much video material does not need that much bandwith for color, so depending on the source material component will look better or the same. i just go with componenent whenever possible. most special cables are B.S. (there is a great post about wires on this forum a little while ago)

Component is better but not by much unless you have a really large, high quality TV.

Dont forget, it also makes bad signal sources look worse so if you have bad cable to begin with (for instance) it will look even worse.

well... you need a 3 connector RCA. I bought one from Radio shack for $15 or so... good quality with gold connectors. $70 for Monster Cable is a RIP OFF. I mean.. you could build your own 2 meter cable with RG6 for about $10-15... and that probably has better bandwidth than MC.

Go with Component... it is slightly better than S-video, although in many cases, you can't tell much of a difference (depending on the quality of your TV and DVD player).
