What is better for long term storage of photos?

CD's or DVD's - not talking the long gold archival stuff - just your normal purchases - is their a distinct advantage to either?

Does it have to be an optical medium? I personally have a dedicated server with RAID1 (soon to be RAID5) arrays that keep my photos 'safe'. I also backup much of my work at my friend's house in another nearby city on his RAID5 server.

Between CD/DVD, I am not sure if it matters, but if I am archiving using optical mediums, I recommend burning at a slower speed (4x/8x) and only TY media.
