What is better for additional traction in the snow?? Chains or cables??

Since I live in SF and we get no snow out here, I was told by a Walmart clerk that cables would be better for the temporary driving up in the Lake Tahoe area during winter time. Is this true?? If not, why not??

By the way, I have a Mazda MPV minivan.
