What is better, DSL or Cable?

I just found out that my area is available for Comcast cable connection. I am currently on DSLExtreme DSL with 768/128 speed. The price is about the same. Which is better? Anyone had both before and tell me which is better?

Thanks 😀

Depends on how fast the cable is and the saturation of your area. If a lot of people have cable internet in your area and you're getting the cheaper one don't expect a great increase of speed. DSL at least guarantees you the badnwidth.

depends if comcast oversells their bandwidth. stay with dsl, as your speeds will hardly ever vary, cable can vary if they oversell the bandwidth.

DSL guarantees you the speeds and is not limited. Run a server off your cable connection for a week and see how long you have your account. 🙂

It's all a local effect. I've had both DSL and cable. Theoretically, DSL is better. My DSL was a mess, the cable was much faster.

I have been running my server off of my cable account for over a year with no problems, I have Charter cable and they told me although it against the terms of service in my area as long as I did not use a ton of bandwidth it would be ok and if that time ever comes they will give me a warning. I think that is because they have just rolled out the service about a year ago and there are only 15 subscribers on my node.

I've had a server on my cable connection for almost 3 years.

if you live near a college or university, definitely go DSL, forget cable. the neighbors are to stupid to realize that all the p2p crap they installed and loads at startup turns them into a p2p superhub. i can tell when the neighbors get home because the internet slows to a crawl, pings go from 12ms to 2000ms+

thanks LoadRunner

Officially, Comcast's cable modem service offers twice the bandwidth of your current DSL connection(1500/256 vs 768/128), but of course, it's possible to be oversold. If their cable modem service is new to your area, you should be fine, and if it's not new, check with someone, but I have never seen an overloaded cable service myself, which makes me think they're not very common.

Ask around and see what is best in your area.

All ISPs oversell their bandwidth, thats how they make their money. The degree to which they do so can be a problem.

Most certainly not. You may not be limited by a congested node like might happen with cable but if the ISP still doesn't have enough bandwidth to go around, its not going to be there. I run server on the cable account at my parents place. I run servers on the dsl account at my place. Its against both ISP's TOS, but neither one actively enforces it.

I had a friend that worked in the NCC for a _MAJOR_ corporate-level ISP and I was absolutely AMAZED at the stories he told me about how much they oversold the links to their corporate customers. If everybody on their network used 1/2 of the bandwidth they had contracted for, the whole network would crash. ... or so this person claimed.
