what is best readable CDRW media?

because i make winxp installation cd w/ custom hot fixes and programs with help from www.msfn.org so far i've wasted about 100 cdr.s in two months, and i don't think my wallet will be happy if this keeps up.

i've tried using CDRW (memorex and sony) but reading of cdrw is so much slower than of a cdr.

and, most of the time, some readers are not able to read some files from a cdrw, thus leaving me nowhere but to turn to trusty fuji cdr.

so if anyone knows a cdrw media that you thought rivals compatibility of a cdr, please share your info i'd really appreicate it, and so will my burner and wallet.

Ricoh or Verbatim (MCC). Everything else out there for CD-RW media is just garbage, IMHO.
As far as the read-speed goes, many drives slow down on purpose, there is no way to make them go faster when reading CDRW. For example my Afreey 56X CD-ROM will read pressed and burned CD-R at 56X CAV, but slows down to 8X CLV when reading CDRW.

IMHO it depends on the drive in question as to what`s the best media etc and even the burn speed can effect quality of the burn,read this for more info.

A few things I've experienced with CD-RW's:

Computer drives are generally good about reading RW's, except the new ultra-high speed things, 16x-24x. Most brand new drives can read them, but other drives, like 24x CD-ROM drives, can't, even if they can see other slower RW discs. Some might have firmware updates available though.


For things like portable MP3 players or car stereos, compatibility varies. My standalone DVD player for example says that it won't read CD-RW's, and this is true for the most part. I do have two 1x-2x discs, from a now-dead company called Smart and Friendly, which the player can read. It won't see any RW's of any other brand or speed.
My RCA MP3 player likes Verbatim 4x and SKC 10x, but not Memorex 4x or 12x (listed speeds are the rated speeds; actual burn speed has no effect on readability here).

Ones that are made in Japan followed by Europe, then it's a toss up between Mexico and Taiwan (ie.Fuji came from all these countries)...I'm leaning towards and now finding Mem's post very informative

Taiyo Yuden (sold under several brand names but it's easy to tell as they are about the only media you'll find still Made in Japan), Ricoh or Verbatim. CD-RW media is low contrast and makes it very difficult for older readers. Try cutting the speed down when you are writing to the CD-RW disks and for sure NEVER burn them over speed - may give you a more readable product as it usually does on CD-R media.
