I've got 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, and Pentium 2 systems. They trudge along at FaD or F@H, but nothing compared to P3/P4 systems. I probably should give up the ghost on anything less than PPro dually.

Personally I say screw anything less than a P2 or P3. The cost/performance ratio just suck too bad to make it worth it for me.

I hear ya, but I'm a sucker for keeping things going. Perhaps I should take NewEgg's 1-Day Sale on P4EE for only $960?

I think that ChessBrain would be a good bet for those. As they are lower powered, it would keep them up closer to 50% usage given the extra time it would take to work on the results :)

With all those machines you could move up the ranks in ChessBrain pretty quickly :)

ChessBrain will only work when it recieves work from the server. Often this is very regularly, but some days it is a little more sparse.

for that price you could build 3 cheap 1700+ @ 2.0-2.1 ghz systems and get 2x the output...;)

I was kidding. I haven't paid that much for a CPU since early '90's when I had to be the first to own a P90 at $832. Still have it and it still runs. Believe me, I'm all about cost efficiency and overclocking: latest is Barton 2500+ at 3200+, then there's my old P3/450 at 504

It's not really the performance.... But..... The Cost of electricity vs what you get in return. I figure you burn 5-6 486-PII's you'll spend more $$ on electric bills... Then it would be if you just bought a single 400SC for 300 bucks.

Unless you have your own solar or wind plant in your back yard?

I agree with ericlp.
It is not worth the electricity to crunch with some of the older machines.
