I want to convert songs on some of my CDs to MP3s so I can download them to my MP3 player. What is a good program for doing this? Is there any FREE programs like this?

If you want something simple like Audiocatalyst, but as good as EAC + LAME, get CDex. It uses the LAME codec as well so the quality is the best. I believe if you download CDex from their site, it comes with Lame 3.89 alpha, but it's constanlty changing as the LAME encoder seems to get updated every month.

By the way, it's also free.:)

The best solution would be Audiograbber for DAE, and Fraunhoffer CODEC for WAV -> MP3 compression.

I suggest you read here before doing anymore encoding.

<< Audiocatalyst is prolly the best but it's not free. >>

That proggie sucks for encoding mp3's. Where have you been, the Xing mp3 encoder used by Aduiocatalyst is the WORST one out there! And the ripper is not too good either.

That's totally ignorant. Fraunhoefer is good if you are living in 1998, but since it is now 2001 it's been far surpassed by LAME. And Audiograbber is a primitive DAE solution compared to CDEX or especially EAC! Fraunhoefer's spent all their money fighting unwinnable patent lawsuits instead of improving their product.

edit: and LAME, CDEX, and EAC are all freeware. No pirating, stealing, or otherwise compromising yourself to get them.

DbPowerAmp is awesome IMO. It uses the LAME or Blade codecs, simple to use. I have tried the others and have had nothing but trouble from the EAC -> Razorlame combo.

you don't even need eac + razorlame... in eac just choose external compressor... find the lame.exe and put in your commandline...
