What is best for small biz file sharing?

What is a good server program where employees at a small business can have server space for their files so that when they log in, they log into the server, their files are automatically available to them, and them only, no matter what client computer they log into? I know that novell can do this, but what is a simpler program for a small business? If there isnt any, what is M$'s equivilent server that would do this?

Linux with Samba installed can do this and act just like a MS product.

Windows 2000 Server would probably be your MS product. However, Linux is free and Samba is too.

if your network is limited to less than 10 users - you don't even need win2000 server, you could probably set this up with win2000 pro where you have everyone on a peer to peer network, designate on computer as a "superpeer" and have files stored on it, with access for each folder restricted by password.

About Linux:
I know I can do this with linux....but boss-man prefers windows, but if has to spend a lot of money, he was willing to have linux installed.

Win2000 pro
How can you set a computer to be a 'superpeer'? We have XP pro on all of the computers, but the only way to password protect the file shares is to turn off simple file sharing...and when that is turned off...under permissions, it does not list any other computers. Thus, it will now allow any other computers on the network to have permissions to the drive. All the computers are on the same workgroup...

I think im gonna go samba, if the boss goes for it. Linux is either 20x easier or 20x better but always infinity times cheaper :-D

Good call.

You would probably want Win2K server and that's some change. Linux has been given an evil connotation in some corners of the world but if you set it up right your boss will start wondering why he didn't do it sooner.

Good luck.
