i7-4790K would be my guess (unless you're talking about overclocking). 4 cores, HT, high clock speed.

i7-6790k. You'll have to spend quite a lot to bribe someone at Intel to give you one, though.

jus curious.. :D
Sky is the limit.:)

Everything depends on your wallet size, ego and sense of optimality.
If you want a rather long age system you should grab X99 system. Its 8 core CPUs performance could serve even the most advanced GPU a few years later.
Just like X58 based system, despite its age, still kicking hard now.

In short, buy high end system.

I second the 4790K. 4 core, 8 thread, highest clocked CPU Intel ships.

More cores / threads will benefit very few games, but in a few cases you might see the 5960X (8 cores / 16 threads) pull ahead. Its base clock is only 3/4 as high though (3GHz vs 4GHz), and would need to be overclocked to not lose in a majority of cases.

Strangely, the 5960x even at stock is at the top of almost every game.gpu benchmark, at least for recently released games. If you can overclock to 4.0 or so, I think it would have to be the choice, although at a high initial cost and power consumption.

But for most users at a "reasonable" price and power consumption, I would go along with the 4790k.

depends on what review you look at but overall I see the 4790k easily being the fastest CPU for just pure gaming from the reviews I've looked at.

If money is literally no issue, probably the 5960x on X99 motherboard.

If money is a small issue, 4790k on Z97 motherboard.

5960X, especially if you overclock it.

Though a 4690K would still get reasonably close for a fraction of the price.

the 4790 K is faster. Makes a nice difference in Crysis 3 if you're trying to stay over 60 frames per second.

4790k for mostly SP titles
5960k for a lot of MP-heavy titles

Can't go wrong with either really...if you plan to OC, the 5960k will be the best option IMHO.

in gaming benchmarks there is little to no difference between the 2?

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/1261?vs=1260

i know those are averages but seriously 100 dollars more for what?
this is not a budget question. The 4790 K is faster overall and that's a fact and that's all he's trying to ask. And again it's a playable difference if trying to run vsync in Crysis 3 and maybe some other games that I'm not aware of.

a lot of nobs, a lot of wrong answers.

The best cpu for gaming is an overlocked 5960x.
U must reach 4.5 ghz to mantain hi fps on not multithreaded games.

On some games a 5930k can score better, because they cant use 8 core, but 5960x it s better.

i was going to buy it, it is the best.

dont believe cheap gamers

A 4790K will generally reach higher overclocks because it has fewer cores.

5960x, Richie's Rich choice coupled with an nvidia titan, of course.

4790k, the smarter choice.

4690K, the smartest you can go: the money you spare goes to a better gpu.

There's no such thing as future proof. There is no excuse for that 5960x.
With that price difference you can replace the entire 4690k class platform after 3 years. "Crap" like this started to make sense to me as I got older.
Think about it? Well, I guess if you're Richie Rich you just don't give a damn.

14000 in 4890 v2 cpus and a 700 dollar Asus Z10PE-D8 WS and 512gb of memory.

if price is no issue.

unfortunately no overclocking.
