What is Best Buy trying to pull?

Alright, so if you have visited the Hot Deals forum, then you would see that we've had our hands on the "Black Friday" BB ad for quite some time now. Most of us bought the items before the sale so we could just pricematch them during the 5 hour sale rather wait in ridicoulus lines. Well, so my dad and I come to BB at 8:30am. There is a line outside the store (1 hour wait), we decide to go home and come back at 10:30am. So we come back at 10:30am, there's a 5 minute line to get into the store, we wait in line. Head straight for Customer Service. I want to check out the DC games so I go to the back of the store and see the picked over Dreamcast items. I managed to grab the 2nd to last Dreamcast controller and a Blue colored VMU.

I go back to the Customer Service line, my dad has probably gone two spots up since when we got there 5 minutes later. So, while we're waiting in line, I see this Best Buy Customer Service clerk behind this desk right next to us. Behind the desk she has the IBM Webcams and the Lexmark printers. I ask if those are the ones for free, she says yeah, but the Lexmark printer doesn't come with any cartriges or a USB port meaning the printer is a paperweight. Add on the $40 extra for the printer and you have yourself a $60 POS Lexmark printer. Same goes for Webcams, without the software, which they don't have anymore, they can't give away the bundle rebates. So they're selling the webcam by itself for $20. What a joke, and I said nevermind.

Anyways, we get to the Customer Service desk and say we want the GeForce 3 Xtasy Video Card, 256mb RAM and the 110 PNY CD-R's pricematched. Their response, "We can't do that, since we don't have those products currently in stock." I exclaim that no-where does it say that you can't exchange if you don't have the product in stock. We looked through their ad, it said nothing about this being a special sale and not being able to pricematch. Finally, after 15 minutes of arguing they give us a stupid answer saying, "The manager told us not to pricematch unless we have it in stock." My dad and I both walk away unsatisfied, my dad is currently still on the phone with BB 1-800 number.

Anyone else have these types of horror stories?

Did you ask for a manager? Best Buy has a 14/30 day price guarantee depending on the product. If their price is lower than what you paid withing that 14/30 day grace period they have to pricematch.

You probably just got the wrong Customer Service rep who had no idea what she was doing.

Best Buy, especially it's Costumer Service department, is evil. The only thing I buy at BB are CDs (and that's only if I can't find them cheaper on line).

Nah, all their managers were "currently" busy and they classified the 5 hour sale a "Special Offer."

Sorry to hear that MrCodeDude, but you're problebly SOL. Most managers care only about their bottom line and don't give a fsck about customer service. Unfortunately, the ones who truely do care get promoted quickly and are replaced with mindless drones.

But regarding your service problem, Best Buy's policy towards special sales is it's up to a manager whether to allow certain things in a "case by case basis".

EDIT: typo

Yeah, seriously. They take care of everyone on a "case by case" basis. Some quotes are:
"Well, what we were doing for some other people was letting them buy the product now and then returning the product that they previously bought."

I'm like, it's not my fault you don't have any in, but of course the lady working there probably had an IQ of like 7 or something.

Kinda sounds like you were trying to beat the system, and it didn't work. You knew in advance what the sale items were, and tried to get BB to match the price on an item you bought in advance. Maybe next time you'll wait and buy the items at the store, not get them to sell themselves short.

If you're unhappy, why not return the products for a refund and shop at a place that has policies you agree with? If your answer is that those other places cost more, I guess you get what you pay for.

I've never been in a BB...though i assume it's alot like circuit city...actually they're building a BB right down the street, which is across the street from a circuit city, really convenient, just walk across there and get a better price...yay....i buy all my comp stuff online except CD's, as was mentioned before....so does BB have worse tech support/costomer service than Frys electonics??

I walked into BB this morning, waited in the Customer Service line for 30 minutes, said "I need a price adjustment on the first item," filled out the form, walked out with $52.50 on my CC and the rebate form. SIMPLE. Try a different BB tomorrow, or try the same one and hope you get a better customer service person.

Thing is, when I bought the products, I asked the guy if I could pricematch them during the 5 hour sale. The BB guy said yes, so I bought the games in advance. Had I known that they were going to pull this crap, I would have been in line at 5:30am. The 5 hour sale is now gone, therefore I have no hope seeing how my dad got nowhere.

It seems as if the Milpitas BB is the worst in the country, as it seems everyone else was allowed to return and re-buy during the 5 hour sale, while I wasn't. They said that I couldn't return it and buy it right back, I'd have to come back the next day.

You can still get the pricematch friday to saturday. The geforce3 is on sale til sat. It was in the their ad that the 5 hour sale was only on the items on the front page.

Pfft. Now THAT'S crap. Why the hell couldn't you do that? They have no say over when you return or buy something. As long as they're in returnable shape, they can't put additional timeframe conditions on them. I think you need to go back and raise some holy hell.

Guys, think about the words you used...........The word PRICEMATCH to a CSR will get you that answer. The words PRICE GUARANTEE or PRICE ADJUSTMENT will get you what you want. Do you realize how many times that CSR heard PRICEMATCH today and knew OD, OM, Frys, Circuit City, etc didn't have it in stock. Hello, McFly!!!!!!! Be a little courteous and nicer to them and you'll go a lot further!

You tried to beat their system and got beat in their home stadium. I'm laughing at this right now!!!!!!!!

Pricematch and Price Adjustment are the same thing.. I don't understand why you're laughing at me for Best Buy's mistake. The only reason I tried to beat the system was because I was told by a Best Buy employee that I could.

You should have said to them.. alright then.. I'd like to return it.. and buy it again right now.. they'd have to honor that... just say.. "alright.. I'd like a refund then..." they give you your money.... Then say to them..."hey, can I buy that GF3 Card and the 110 pk of cds please? Thanks"" go to the register and pay.... thats the only reason the price guarantee makes sense.. cause you COULD just return the product and buy it right away... but instead, the price guarantee is easier..

edit: whoops sorry, didnt see somebody else had already suggested this... it still shoulda worked.. you shoulda taken it to the higher ups if they told you that you had to wait til tomorrow to buy it back... thats BS...

I already mentioned that I tried that. I asked if I could return the GF3 card and cd-r's and then buy it back right then and they said no. Because you can not buy back something the same day you return the same item. That's bull and tonight I'm going to complain.

And I heard someone say it's a whole weekend sale. I'll check that out.

Pricematch sounds a little bell in a CSR that you want to pricematch with another store.

<< The only reason I tried to beat the system was because I was told by a Best Buy employee that I could. >>

A typical Best Buy employee will also tell you that if you buy a CDRW service plan that they will realign the laser when it goes out of whack in about 14 months too. You believe everything that a sales puke tells you. Ultimately, the manager does have the right to do what he did. He could have adjusted the price and not given you a sales receipt dated for today for your mail in rebate too.

I'm still laughing though. But I do this every Black Friday that I shop Best Buy instead of work in the store. I laugh at the Mgrs, the customers and my own co-workers.

Back to the subject, tomorrow my dad is calling the Customer Service 1-800 number and trying to talk to one of the head managers up there. I'm going to guess that they'll give in and not want to deal with a small problem that should have never happend in the first place. 95% sure they'll give us the 5 hour sale price.

i'd suggest u just try different stores/different CSRs... or bring a scanned receipt showing a pricematch as evidence... BB managers can be di*ks sometimes, those Aholes...

My story is alot like yours, MrCodeDude, except with a ton of rudeness thrown in.
See my post in the: Other BB rebate Thread thread.

But I was able to go to another BB and they PM'd it with no fuss and even did it with a smile. What a difference between the two stores.
