well, dictionary.com says it means raising to a higher leave so wouldn't 10 have to be on top? as you go up.. .you get higher?

Forget about up and down. Just write the numbers left to right. As you go more to the right (forward) you get higher values.

it depends on how you read your data. it should always ascend, increase, as you read your data. most people read from left to right and top to bottom though. 10 should only be on top if you read from bottom to top.

Ascending: Low to High. Start the list with the lowest value.
Descending: High to Low. Start the list with the highest value.

In the frame of reference of top left->bottom right writing, to ascend means

while in the frame of reference of, say, an aircraft, it is

It's all a matter of where you're starting and where you're finishing.
