What is are some good boards for the Athlon 1.33 and 1.4ghz socket A?

Hey dudes. My brother asked me recently if I'd build him a system since I had built one for myself recently and it turned out pretty good. Unlike myself who had to keep it under a budget, he has money to burn on it so he wants to go with the fastest Amd chip out there. I am just wondering what are some good boards to use with the Athlon 1.33 and 1.4ghz chips. My setup is with a 1ghz slot A so I don't know of any good boards for the other. Any suggestions?

Epox 8K7A is pretty much top of the line as far as DDR systems go.
Asus A7V133 and the Iwill KK266 if you wanna use PC133

Yeap, the Epox 8K7A is awesome. Epox just released a new BIOS allowing for fsb settings up to 250MHz!! Yea baby, now I need some 500MHz DDR.

Cool, I was thinking of going with a DDR board so I think I'll check out the Epox board. How is Epox with documentation they include with the mb? When I built my system I got a Soyo board and they give you a 10 page manual that is basically useless. It took me about 2 months before I was able to find out the Soyo board was not compatible with the Tbird variety of the Slot A Athlon. Once I got an MSI K7 Pro I had no problems and the documentation with the MSI board was much more detailed.

The manual... it's ok. really no different from other mfg's. Has all the info on how to set it up BIOS settings and Jumper settings, etc...

Asus's only good DDR board (to this date) is the A7M266. It has been discontinued, while the stores that still have it in stock are charging $200 for it. I actually have an Asus A7M266 sitting here on my shelf. It was DOA, so I've got to get an RMA from Asus sometime this week. The Epox manual is about as descriptive as an Asus manual. The only thing that Epox skimps really bad on would be memory settings.

When it comes to the installation of drivers.. You need to install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers (1431'ish); install everything that is included with those expect the AGP driver. Once you have those installed, you need to download the latest AMD AGP Miniport drivers for the AMD761 chipset off of AMD's website.

EDIT- At this point in time, don't get the A7A266 unless you must. The Ali Magik chipset is just now getting to the point where its drivers are maturing. The AMD761 is the fastest DDR chipset as of right now, and it isn't any more expensive than the Via or Ali.

yep, asus a7a266. supposed to be pretty good ddr board

EDIT: except i don't like the "ali magic" chipset...i'd rather have via

The epox manual is fine, nothing special except a long section on using the ghost program on the driver disk. All drivers required are on the disk but can be updated from via/amd when you're ready. The mem settings offer automatic and manual and work well. Using manual settings got me up quite a bit in sisoft mem benchmarks.

One more question guys. Will the Asus A7V133 work with a 1.33 or 1.4ghz Athlon? On the Asus site it sais it will handle up to a 1ghz Athlon. Is there just a bios upgrade that will allow it to handle the faster chip? Just want to be sure if we decide to go with the Asus and sdram.

if you look closely it probably says "1 ghz +"

i'm positive it will handle all the new tbirds.

and they just released a new bios about a week or two ago, 1007 i believe, which seems to run nice and stable for me

by the way....

the a7v133 supports "266 fsb tbirds" so make sure you buy an actual "266 fsb" processor (instead of a 200 fsb one)
