If someone special has invited you to dinner, what is appopriate to bring without insulting him/her? Is dessert a safe bet?

I would bring a nice dessert. Maybe a piece of cherry pie, applie pie, keylime pie, cheesecok, fudge pie, or just pecan pie. A bottle of wine would do good too.

If there is some special desert or appetizer that you are very good at making, bring that.

Otherwise a bottle of wine is always a safe bet (unless the host is a mormon or recovering alcoholic).

Some safe bet, good, but cheap wines (you should always be able to get a good bottle of wine for <$10):
Bogle Petit Sirah ~$8
Tryrell's Long Flat Red ~$7
Beaujolais by Jadot or Duboeuf ~$7-8
Casillero del Diablo Sirah ~$8
